In 1999 Matt and David made 'Sir Bernard's Stately
Homes' for BBC2. Sponsored by Allen's Crisps (who are running a competition involving a golden potato hidden at one of the stately homes), Sir Bernard Chumley, famous stage actor and raconteur, teams up with wife-murdering probationer Anthony Rodgers to make a six part series of ten minute documentaries. About stately homes. And shit... Each of the stately homes is named after a classic Grange Hill character. The places of interest are as follows: Episode 1: Baxter Grange. The ancestral home of the Nelsons, where Sir Bernard dresses up as Nelson. David Foxxe plays Sir Henry Nelson, a camp elderly gentleman. Episode 2: Browning Abbey. The home of the Archbishop and his verger (played by David Foxxe) who is very camp and collects dolls, much to Sir Bernard's amusement. He upsets Sir Bernard by bringing up the infamous 'Juliet Bravo' incident. Episode 3: Yates Castle. The former home of the Chumley family is now owned by Dame Lily Yates (a camp old woman played by David Foxxe) after it was won in a card game. Sir Bernard attempts to burn it down but only manages a very small burn mark on the bed. Episode 4: Bronson House. Princess Anne's country retreat inspires Anthony to dress as a royal and the gang run into their doppelgangers who are making an identical documentary series. Episode 5: Kendall Park. This stately home is attached to a theme park and Sir Bernard and Anthony swap clothes with two cub scouts in an attempt to get in. The camp owner of the house is played by David Foxxe. Paul Putner is the scout leader. Episode 6: Stebson Towers. Home to camp drama queen Sir Elton John, played by David Foxxe. Also visiting is George Michaels (Paul Putner). The episode ends with Sir Bernard and Anthony singing the theme from Minder. And why not? Trivia Bit: Many of the recurring themes from Mash And Peas, Rock Profile and Little Britain are also present here. Episode two has Anthony wearing Princess Anne's clothes. She became a figure of obsession for Peter Andre the royal watcher from Little Britain and Mash And Peas. The old 'it's not what it looks like' farcical moment used to great effect with Sebastian in Little Britain occurs with Anthony and Dame Lily when she sponges his wet trousers. George Michaels appears as a character again, following his appearance in Mash And Peas (played by David) and preceding Rock Profile (once by Matt and later again by David) and his cameo in Little Britain (played by George Michael). Ditto for Sir Elton, almost. Sir Bernard and Anthony end the series performing the theme from Minder, made famous by the real Dennis Waterman and endlessly recycled for Little Britain. And of course Sir Bernard Chumley was in the first series of Little Britain and on the radio. Sir Bernard's Stately Homes starred Matt Lucas and David Walliams, with David Foxxe and Paul Putner plus guest stars. It was very amusing. "I happened to be holding a pair of scissors... I fell onto her head and in the confusion I imagine I must have cut her hair... the first Juliet Bravo is too bald and traumatised to continue with the role..." Sir Bernard Chumley, 1999. |
